Woonsocket City Councilor Brian J. Thompson Announces Run for District 20 State Senate Seat

 

Woonsocket City Councilor Brian J. Thompson officially declares his candidacy for the Rhode Island State Senate District 20. With nearly two decades of residency in Woonsocket, Thompson is deeply rooted in the community and is passionate about representing the interests of all constituents in the district, including those in Cumberland and throughout Rhode Island.

 

Thompson's decision to run for State Senate was influenced by his close friend Senator Roger Picard, who recently announced his retirement from the Senate. Thompson conveyed his appreciation for Picard's many years of service and expressed his commitment to upholding Picard's legacy of prioritizing the needs of the community. "I am proud to announce my candidacy for State Senate District 20 and to continue the tradition of dedicated service set by Senator Picard," stated Thompson. "I am eager to be a strong voice for our community and will work tirelessly to address the pressing issues facing Woonsocket and Cumberland."

 

During his time on the Woonsocket City Council, Thompson has demonstrated a strong dedication to improving the quality of life for residents and a willingness to bring a strong voice to the important issues facing his constituents. He pledges to continue this commitment in his role as State Senator. Thompson's platform includes advocating for policies that support working families, enhancing educational opportunities, and focusing on stimulating economic growth in the region.

President Biden and Donald Trump are set to face off in general election debates scheduled for June and September. The two will participate in a CNN debate on June 27th in Atlanta, and a second debate hosted by ABC News on September 10th. The debates were scheduled hours after Biden today challenged the former president in a video posted to X, saying "I hear you're free on Wednesdays," a dig at Trump's court schedule in his hush money trial in New York.        The Biden Administration says it will move forward with a new billion-dollar weapons package for Israel. On Tuesday, the administration announced the package includes tank ammunition, tactical vehicles, and mortar rounds. The news comes a week after the White House paused a shipment of bombs to Israel after the IDF announced an assault on the city of Rafah, where over a-million Palestinians have fled to avoid the war.        Opening statements are underway in the corruption trial of New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez. It took nearly three days to select 12 jurors and six alternates, after attorneys went through an initial pool of about 150-people. Menendez is accused of taking bribes, including cash and gold bars, in exchange for helping three New Jersey businessmen.        The Supreme Court is allowing Louisiana to move forward with a redrawn congressional district map. Last year, Louisiana's original district map was ruled to be a racial gerrymander, and it was redrawn. The updated layout includes two majority-black districts in the state. On Wednesday, the Supreme Court granted requests to block a lower court ruling that would have invalidated the redrawn districts.        McDonald's is reportedly set to launch its five-dollar value meal as inflation leads to higher fast-food prices. The meal deal will offer a choice of a McChicken, McDouble or four-piece chicken McNuggets with fries and a drink. But Mickey D's may be doing away with free drink refills sooner than expected       Basketball superstar Caitlin Clark continues to draw millions of viewers. Her WNBA debut Tuesday night averaged two-point-one-million viewers. The game between Clark's Indiana Fever and the Connecticut Sun was the most-watched WNBA game since Memorial Day 2001. It also broke ESPN's record for a WNBA game.
