Recycling and Trash Collection Information
 
 

Curbside yard waste collection has ended.

Please DO NOT line your recycle bins with commercially sold liners. Plastic shopping bags are NOT recyclable, if your recycle bin has a liner or plastic bags in them they will not be collected.

 

Trash/recycling will be on a regular schedule the week of Christmas and New Years Day.

North Smithfield – Full Revaluation Project for 2021

Please note the revaluation company will be working in Assessor plat 12 starting December 20, 2021.

 

The Town of North Smithfield is preparing to visit and inspect all improved properties in the Town as part of the 2021 Revaluation Project. The state of Rhode Island mandates that cities and towns revalue all property every three years, (RIGL 44-5-11.6). The town has hired Northeast Revaluation Group, LLC, a municipal revaluation vendor located in Warwick, RI to assist with the project. The process is expected to begin mid-April 2021.

Data collectors from Northeast Revaluation will have identification badges, will be wearing red vest, and their automobiles will be registered with the North Smithfield Police Department. When visiting a property, inspectors will place a specialized door hanger on the appropriate door, knock, and step back a minimum of six feet. The door hanger will explain that the data collector will be inspecting the outside of the home. It is important to note that no valuation decisions are made at the time of inspection. At a later date, the property owner will receive an Interior Data Verification letter that will provide an opportunity to review the interior features and make adjustments. The assessing department has additional details regarding this process should homeowners have a question.

Since all assessed valuations are based on sales as of a certain date, later changes in the market will gradually make assessments out of step with the real estate marketplace. The rise and fall of real estate values make certain properties more valuable or less valuable, in relation to each other. It’s for these reasons that the State settled on the three-year schedule for property revaluations.

The project is scheduled for completion in early 2022 and property owners can expect to receive a new assessment notice at that time. The notice will include the new property assessment and information regarding informal appeals. For any questions regarding this process, please call the Assessor’s office at 401-767-2200 ext. 325. The town will also be informing residents of the whereabouts of the inspectors throughout the town, which streets, or section they will be working in. This will be posted weekly on the town website, and in the town’s newsletter.

North Smithfield Food Pantry

The Food Pantry is for North Smithfield residents.

You must have a photo ID and a bill that confirms your North Smithfield address. You can attend the Food Pantry all four times it is open per month.

The Pantry is located at the Slatersville Congregational Church

UCC on the Common.

Due to the pandemic, the food is distributed through a drive through at the church. Please stay in your car and line up on Green Street and you will be welcomed and instructed. We are also asking clients to please return to mask wearing.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING TOWN OF NORTH SMITHFIELD The North Smithfield Town Council will conduct a public hearing at a special meeting scheduled on Monday December 13, 2021, beginning at 6:45 P.M. at the North Smithfield Town Hall, 83 Greene Street. Weston & Sampson, Engineering Firm for the Halliwell Review Committee project, will be presenting the final report and presentation of their findings of the property of the former Halliwell School. Persons interested are encouraged to attend.

LIVESTREAMING OPEN MEETINGS

A. Livestreaming for Town Council, Halliwell Review Committee, Zoning Board and Planning Board: The Town will provide livestreaming for the open meetings of the Town Council, Halliwell Review Committee, Zoning Board of Review, and Planning Board whenever feasible via YouTube, Zoom, or some other technology. If technical difficulties occur during the livestream of an open meeting, the open meeting will continue to proceed as scheduled without livestreaming. (Livestreaming increases public access to public meetings in addition to the right of the public to attend open meetings in person.)

B. Public must be physically present to participate. Members of the public, applicants, petitioners, expert s, etc. who want to participate in an open meeting in any fashion must be physically present at the meeting. Members of the public, applicants, petitioners, experts, etc. will not be allowed to participate in an open meeting remotely by offering comment, testimony, or other remarks. through virtual means.

C. No other Board, Commission, or Committee will be livestreamed: Except as specified above, the Town will not provide livestreaming for any other Board, Commission or Committee.

D. Technical Difficulties: If technical difficulties occur during any livestream, the open meeting will continue to proceed as scheduled.

Former President Trump is attacking the validity of his trial following a second day of testimony. Trump said the trial is being conducted at the behest of President Biden to keep him off the campaign trail. Earlier, witness for the prosecution David Pecker said when he ran the "National Enquirer" he funneled payments through Trump's lawyer Michale Cohen to kill a story about an alleged affair with a playboy model. The NYPD is investigating claims that outside groups are bankrolling anti-Israel protests at universities in the Big Apple. The NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Operations notes the student encampments at Columbia and NYU are all using the same color tents. He suspects "professional agitators" are behind the protests centered on the Israel-Hamas war.       Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is calling on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to resign. In an interview with Ireland's RTE's Six One News, Pelosi called Netanyahu an obstacle to a two-state solution between Israel and Gaza. She said the U.S. recognizes Israel's right to protect itself but argued Netanyahu has been a block to peace in the region for years. Gas prices are dipping slightly. Triple-A puts today's national average at three-66 a gallon. That's a penny less than yesterday's average. Drivers in Mississippi are enjoying some of the cheapest prices in the U.S. at three-09 a gallon.        The NHL's Stanley Cup Playoffs feature four games tonight. In the Eastern Conference, the Washington Capitols will square off against the New York Rangers for game two of their series. Next, the Tampa Bay Lightning will look to even their series against the Florida Panthers. In the Western Conference, the Colorado Avalanche will attempt to tie their series against the Jets in Winnipeg. Lastly, the Nashville Predators will face off against the Canucks in Vancouver for game two.        The Killers, Tyler the Creator and Sturgill Simpson will headlines this year's edition of San Francisco's Outside Lands music festival. Other marquee names include 1970s and '80s disco and new wave star Grace Jones and indie band The Postal Service. The festival will be held August 9th through the 11th. Passes go on sale Wednesday.
