The Senate will vote today on a Republican-backed measure that would pay some federal workers who stayed on the job during the government shutdown. The bill is known as the Shutdown Fairness Act and would pay air traffic controllers, military members, border patrol agents and other "essential workers." It comes as the shutdown is in day 23 after the Senate failed for the 12th time on Wednesday to pass a funding bill that would reopen the government.        Current and former NBA players and coaches are facing charges in connection with federal investigations into gambling. FBI Director Kash Patel announced investigators uncovered a illegal gambling operation as well as a sports betting rigging scheme. Miami Heat player Terry Rozier and former coach and player Damon Jones are accused of using inside information to make wagers on games, while Portland Trailblazers coach Chauncey Billups was arrested in connection with a poker scheme involving the Italian-American mafia.        Construction crews have begun demolition of the East Wing of the White House to make room for President Trump's new ballroom. Trump said Wednesday he was tearing down the entire East Wing to make space for his 90-thousand-square-foot ballroom. He downplayed the significance of tearing down the historic structure that held the first lady's office, calling it a "very small building" that "was never thought of as being much."        Dozens of federal immigration agents are expected in California's Bay Area soon. This sets up a potential showdown between President Trump and Governor Gavin Newsom. Multiple reports say nearly 100 Border Patrol agents are set to begin arriving today at Coast Guard Base Alameda.        Results from a clinical trial show a new drug can increase the chances of people surviving advanced prostate cancer. The trial shows adding the drug enzalutamide to hormone therapy brings down the risk of premature death by more than 40 percent in patients whose prostate cancer had returned. This was just published in The New England Journal of Medicine. The trial involved men who have already undergone surgery or radiation therapy.        Another sign that spooky season is upon us arrives today in the form of National Horror Movie Day. So grab your popcorn, a blanket and whatever else you need to get you through a good scary movie. "Variety" has a list of what it says are the top 100 horror films of all time. "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" takes the top spot as what the publication calls one of the very few horror movies that possesses "the quality of a true nightmare."
