Governor McKee, Commissioner Infante-Green Recognize Weekly Attendance Leaders

Week of April 8, 2024 

 

PROVIDENCE, RI – Acknowledging the importance of consistent attendance in education and in alignment with the #AttendanceMatters campaign, Governor Dan McKee and Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green are pleased to highlight the top elementary, middle, and high schools with the greatest average weekly attendance as well as elementary and secondary schools with the greatest improvement in weekly attendance.

 

The following schools are Rhode Island’s attendance leaders for the week of April 8, 2024*: 

 

·     Elementary: Ashton Elementary School, Cumberland – 96.3% 

·     Middle: Achievement First Iluminar Mayoral Academy Middle School – 93.7% 

·     High School: Cumberland High School – 95.1%

 

Special recognition is extended to the following schools for demonstrating the most improved average attendance rates from the previous week:  

 

·     Elementary: Stony Lane Elementary School, North Kingstown – 3.9%

·     Middle: Joseph L. McCourt Middle School, Cumberland – 5% 

·     High: Central Falls High School – 5%

 

The Governor and Commissioner express their gratitude and encouragement to all schools in Rhode Island for their ongoing efforts to prioritize attendance and reinforce the value of consistent learning experiences for all students.

Four law enforcement officers in North Carolina are dead, the result of injuries suffered during a shootout Monday outside of a home in Charlotte. At least four others were hospitalized. Records show the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force was attempting to serve a warrant for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon when the situation turned deadly.       A Columbia University pro-Palestinian student group claims it's occupying an academic building on campus. Columbia Students for Justice in Palestine posted on X that "dozens" of students are now occupying Hamilton Hall in protest of what it calls the university's "complicity in genocide."        Five Republican-led states are challenging the Biden administration's controversial overhaul of Title-Nine in court. Louisiana, Mississippi, Idaho, Montana, and Texas recently sued to block the new changes. The administration earlier this week expanded the regulation to protect against sex-based discrimination in schools to include gender identity.        The Supreme Court is declining to hear Elon Musk's challenge to an SEC order over his public posts about Tesla. The billionaire filed an appeal with the high court, claiming the agreement to have a lawyer read his Tesla posts before they are sent violates his First Amendment speech rights.        Today is the deadline for some student borrowers to get debt cancelled by consolidating their federal loans. The Department of Education is making this one-time payment adjustment. It's part of the Biden administration's effort to forgive nearly five-billion-dollars in student loans.        NBC Universal's Peacock streaming service will see a price hike just before the Summer Olympics. The monthly subscription fee for Peacock Premium will jump two-dollars to seven-99 starting July 18th for new subscribers. Meanwhile, the price for the mostly ad-free Peacock Premium Plus will go up to 13-99 a month.
